According to a new study in the Journal of Advanced Nursing, “Sleep is a complex rhythmic state.” And you can set that sleep rhythm in motion by selecting the right bedtime music.
In this randomized, controlled trial, researchers recruited 60 people, aged between 60 and 83, who suffered from sleeping difficulties. Participants were asked to choose one of six 45-minute “sedative music tapes” to play at bedtime every night for three weeks.
Using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the researchers measured sleep values before the study, and again at the end of each week of the study.
When music was played at bedtime, all of these quality measures improved:

- Less daytime dysfunction
- Longer sleep
- Reduced disturbance during sleep
- Shorter latency (the time it takes to get to sleep)
And the researchers added this encouraging note: “Sleep improved weekly, indicating a cumulative dose effect.”

Of course, this study doesn’t offer much in the way of guidance or specifics about what qualifies as “gentle bedtime music.”
